Working Holiday Visa type 462

It All Begins Here

Visa type 462 lasts a full year (12 months), time counts from the moment of entry into the country. When your first visa gets granted you have one year to entry Australia.

Immediately after arrival, you must apply for a TNF, i.e. tax number which is needed for each employment. This cannot be done outside of Australia. You need to have a phone number (Australian number) and a residental address (I entered the hostel address that I stayed in). TNF arrives in about a week, by post! Website: https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/tax-file-number

Mobile networks- Telstra has the best signal coverage so I recommend it. I have a prepaid plan, just because it was the best deal. I definitely don't recommend Vodafone- terrible coverage outside the city, tiring service, with which I had a problem twice (packages/payments)

Bank account in Australia - many people set up their account in the Commonwealth or Westpac. I have in NAB, no complains whatsoever. The card arrives at the postal address. Good thing about quick transfers in Australia, you can do it through PayID, which could be set up based on your phone number. Then transferring to your friend is super quick and easy.

Superfund- with each employment, we are asked to provide a super fund, it is important to provide the account number for every job. You can have one superfund for different employment. Every employer transfers an amount to this fund, it is not included in the payment, it is a completely additional amount. Mine is in Virgin Super, I chose it randomly, does the job. If you decide to leave Australia permanently, you may apply for the super refund. The return you get is around 15/25%

The tax rate for WHV makers is always 15%. That applies to the first $45000 earned. At the end of the financial year (end of June) you will be asked to lodge a tax return. You can do it yourself on the ATO website, but you need to register. For that you will have to call the consultant who will help you with creating an account. You have time until October to file the tax return.

Employment: full-time, part-time, casual

  • Full-time and part-time. Rates are at the same level, we are eligible for paid sick leave and annual leave . For unused holidays upon termination of the contract, we get a refund.

  • Casual. Rates higher than the other two cases, no sick and annual leave. Less employee security. You can leave anytime and they can fire you anytime.

It will often be necessary to obtain certificates that will be required by the employer. You usually have to upload them within 30 days of the start of employment. These are e.g. RSA or Responsible Service of Alcohol (in every place where alcoholic beverages are served), Food Handling (wherever food is served), Gaming (in casinos, etc.). They are not unique, which means that you have to do separate courses for different states. Most of them are paid (except Food Handling).

Extension of the WHV visa

You can extend a maximum of two times (i.e. be a maximum of 3 years in total in Australia). To extend for the second year, you must complete 88 days (plus or minus 3 months) of regional work, it is important that the work must be done during the time of the first visa. Proof are payslips, which each employer must provide to the employee, they are attached as documents during the application for an extension. Such a job has many guidelines, including location (postal codes are listed on the official GOV Australia website) and type of employment (also GOV).

To extend the visa for a third year, such work must be done for 179 days (6 months)

Employment does not have to be completed at once or with one employer. What matters is the sum of all the work. So you can start working somewhere for a month, have a break, move elsewhere and work for two months there.

When it comes to converting hours into days, there are no strict rules here. The only thing is that 1 day of work is at least 6 hours of employment. In the case of full-time employment, 5 days of work in the appropriate hourly dimension for employment counts as 7 days. Unfortunately, it is not clearly specified how many hours a week are full-time. What I know is that if you work more than 30 hours on the farm it counts as full week. For hospitality jobs you have to work more than 35 hours weekly.
